The towns of Shekhawati are eminent for their amazing painted havelis. Such is the appeal of the havelis that this region is dubbed as "open art gallery of Rajasthan". The plethora of painted Havelis in rich artistic tradition makes it commendable and fascinating. Most of the buildings are dated from 18th century to early 20th century. The Shekhawati landscape is dotted with so many havelis that tracking them is something like a treasure hunt. Various forms of fine art adorn the walls and the ceilings of these structures, complimenting the otherwise flat and barren land. The havelis are noted for their frescos depicting mythological themes and that of huge animals. Some later day frescos shows the arrival of the British and highlighting steam locomotives and train doubtlessly for the benefit of those members of the household who did not travel to distance places by train or see this newly introduced mode of transport.

There are also forts, minor castles, mosques, wells called baoris and chattris to discover. The Rajputs mostly depicted the themes of historical events, personages' folk-heroes and the prominent war scenes, while the Marwaris concentrated more on religious themes but with the passage of time the themes too began to divert towards the modern views.

Havelis
The beautiful and fascinating havelis of Shekhawati have proved to be a major tourist appeal. Striking architecture, graceful interiors and massive parapets of the havelis stand witness to the wealth and prosperity of the Marwari merchants. Adorned with exquisite murals and delicately latticed and carved windows, these havelis present an awe-inspiring sight. Almost every havelis is decorated with magnificent mirror work and paintings festooned with gold or silver leaf. During the old days, these wooden carvings and gold and silver paintings were assumed to be symbolical of the owner's status and wealth.

Dundlod
Amongst the other places to see in Shekhawati, is the town of Dundlod, situated in the center of the Shekhawati region. The main attractions of the town are its fort and havelis, dating back to the 18th century. The famous havelis of Dundlod are Jagathia and Goenka havelis.

Jhunjhunu
Offering peace and serenity to its visitors, is the town of Jhunjhunu. It is another town famous for its marvelously painted havelis. One of the known havelis is the Modi Haveli, housing some of the best paintings of the Shekhawati area. Then, there is also the Tibrewala Haveli, having numerous murals on it, along with colored glass windows. Amongst the other tourist attractions of Jhunjhunu, are Khetri Mahal (18th century), Bihariji Temple and Mertani Baori (step-well). All of these stand adorned with exquisite paintings.

Fatehpur
The town of Fatehpur was once under the rule of the Muslim Nawabs। A historic town in Shekhawati, Fatehpur has some beautiful havelis. The famous Devra and Singhania havelis of the town are adorned with murals that are of Indo-western style. Another havelis, Goenka has brilliant frescoes paintings, with some of them depicting Lord Krishna.

The Mandawa fort, presently a hotel, houses some magnificent paintings, along with a museum. The bazaar of Mandawa has a painted archway as its entrance, adorned with images of Lord Krishna and his cowherds.

Nawalgarh
Another famous place near Shekhawati is Nawalgarh. Thakur Nawal Singh founded the town in 1737. Fascinating the tourists with their beauty, are some of the finest frescoes in Nawalgarh. Apart from two magnificent forts, the town is famous for its havelis including the Chokhani Haveli, Jodhraj Patodia Haveli, Aath Haveli, Bansidhar Bhagat Haveli, and Anaadilal Poddar Haveli. The havelis impress the tourists with their amazing carvings, beautiful paintings, mirror work, etc.

Churu
One of the attractions of Churu is its magnificent fort, built by Thakur Khushal Singh in 1739 AD. The town is also famous for its grand havelis, made of lime and brick. Decorated with exquisite murals on the portico as well as inside of the rooms, these havelis weave magic on the visitors. There are also temples, chhatries (cenotaphs), Johra (water tank) and wells adorned with colorful frescoes, that make Churu a must see town.
